There was a man without clothes living among tombs. A demon often seized him. He was bound with chains and shackles. Sometimes, he broke these chains. The demon would drive him like a person drives a car into the wilderness. He suffered for a long time.
On the day that Jesus met this man, He commanded the unclean spirit out of him.
At first, the man fell before Jesus and cried out, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!”
When Jesus asked him his name, he replied, “Legion.” A Roman legion was 6,000 highly organized soldiers. Ready for battle! Scripture says that many demons had entered the man. The demons begged Jesus not to command them into the abyss. An abyss is mentioned in Revelation 9:11 as a place where many demons are locked up.
There was a herd of pigs nearby. So, they [the demons] begged Jesus to permit them to enter the pigs. He permitted them. Then, the demons went out of the man and entered the pigs. The herd of pigs bolted down a steep place into a lake and drowned.
Now, the man from whom the demons had departed, sat at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. He wanted to be with Jesus, but Jesus gave him a mission. He told him, “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” The man proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him. [1]
Jesus transformed this man’s life. His life was once full of pain and loneliness, but after he met Jesus, he could enjoy being among people. His life was productive. He helped others to know Jesus.
What would you like Jesus to do for you or for someone you love?
