“All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the spirits. Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established.” [1]
Assuming that we are pure without checking with the Lord is not good. It is good to ask the Lord to examine our spiritual health and to report to us His findings.
In the physical realm, people schedule physical examinations even though they feel fine. Why? Because they know that sometimes a disease is present before a person becomes aware of it. With early detection and treatment of a disease, survival is more likely.
“Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; though they join forces, none will go unpunished. In mercy and truth atonement is provided for iniquity; and by the fear of the Lord, one departs from evil. Better is a little with righteousness, than vast revenues without justice.” [2]
Pride is harmful to one’s spiritual health. Scripture, like a good physician, warns us against pride. Some believe pride is good. They even have parades to celebrate pride.
The Lord recommends turning to Him for mercy and truth. To ask His forgiveness of prideful rebellion against Him! An independent spirit from God may be commonly accepted by the herd or tribe around us, but it is not the path to a happy ending.
The Lord urges us to “fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” [3]
“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud. He who heeds the Word wisely will find good, and whoever trusts in the Lord, happy is he.” [4]
Some people are like chameleons. They know how to blend with people for the sake of gaining their trust and stealing from them, but God sees what they are doing. The Bible says that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. He urges to submit our lives to Him, and to resist the devil so that the devil flees from us. [5] The one who trusts in the Lord and does good will ultimately inherit the greatest reward, and that from God.
The Lord warns us against making money our god. He says, “riches certainly make themselves wings. They fly away like an eagle toward heaven.” They are as a vapor appearing for a moment and then disappearing. Jesus warned us, saying, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” He told the tale of a man who loved worldly wealth and easy living more than God. God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?” Jesus warns us, “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.” [6]
“Honest weights and scales are the Lord’s; all the weights in the bag are His work. It is an abomination for kings to commit wickedness, for a throne is established by righteousness. How much better to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.” [7]
Yes, a king can give what is right and balanced to people and be established if he believes God’s Word and leans on the Lord for help. There are many examples of kings who did so in the Bible. It is better for leaders of nations to make wisdom and understanding the bottom line rather than revenues. Money can be stolen. An abundance of money does not yield love, joy and peace. Love, joy and peace are fruits of the Holy Spirit of God. [8] Knowing and walking with our Creator is the treasure that every nation should hold in highest esteem. A relationship with God yields contentment, wisdom and understanding.
“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” [9]
Spiritual wellness examinations with the Lord are good. Daily stare into the mirror of God’s Word! His Word helps us to see what needs to be improved. His goal is to help us gain victory over death so that we live with Him in heaven forever.
“The Gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the Word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. For we who have believed do enter that rest.” [10]
Hearing the Gospel is not enough. We must believe the Gospel. Do you really believe that Jesus died for your sins? Do you believe that you will enter the heavenly Promised Land based on what Jesus did for you? If so, then enter the rest. Stop competing! Stop hurting! Start forgiving as Christ forgave you! Start loving and helping others as God in Christ as loved and helped you!
“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” [11]
Jesus Christ is the provider of good spiritual health. He is the priest above all priests. He does not condemn us for weaknesses. He sympathizes with us. He knows that we cannot overcome sin without Him. He invites us to come boldly to Him. He will supply us with abundant mercy and grace to enjoy a healthy spiritual life that yields glory to God and love for people.
Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” He wants to make us well. [12]
