The Holy Spirit & Evangelism

“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” [1]

Yesterday, the Holy Spirit brought to mind the image of crocus flowers sprouting and blooming in the snow. This happened every year in the flower beds in front of my mother’s house. The vision came with a sense of hope that the Lord is renewing His people’s readiness to bloom with the Gospel after a long period of lying dormant. Praise the Lord!

He also gave me the image of an electrical plug. When a plug is connected to a power source, power can flow through it to power the device that is otherwise of no use without it. At the time of the vision, I was thinking about evangelism. We may have learned and internalized an outline of the Gospel to share with someone, but unless the Holy Spirit is in us and flowing through us, the person with whom we speak will not be converted.

Evangelistic outlines are helpful tools. During my lifetime, I have used the following methods: Evangelism Explosion, Bridge, Roman Road, and ABC. However, I have learned by experience that only the Holy Spirit can convert a person’s soul. It is not enough to convince the mind because the mind can be unconvinced. The Holy Spirit must be present and bear witness to the listener’s spirit that what is said is true. The person must respond to the witness of the Word and Spirit by believing and confessing that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior.

“Dear Heavenly Father, please help us Your people to propagate Your Good News of how You sent Your Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to be a Savior from sin. Help us to do so with the power and anointing of Your Holy Spirit. For we pray this in the Name of Your Son Jesus. Amen.”
